Updates on Sharon

10/24/08

Dear Special Friends,
I know it has been a long time since I updated you on my medical recovery, but a lot has happened in that time.  My right leg continues to get stronger and stronger each day and I now can walk with the aid of a quad cane.  The wheelchair isn’t quite kicked to the curb yet, but it will be soon!!!  The only therapy I am now taking is occupational for my right arm and hand.  My right hand is pretty well open, but I still have problems with my middle finger.  I have strength and range of motion in that limb, but it will take some time to regain fine motor control.  I did have my eye straightened this past Friday, so facially I look quite normally, rather back to my old self.  My hearing continues to develop as one doctor said to me, “You didn’t think you’d get out of this with nothing, did you?”  The answer is no, but I hope I can return to as normal as possible by next year!  Again, a big thank you and hugs and kisses from me to you for all of your support and prayers during this difficult time.  It is heart warming to know that so many people care.  My love and prayers to you all,
Sharon
P.S.  We have moved during this whole process and our new address, telephone number and email is as follows:

Hello Friends!

It is me again.  Just wanted to give you an update as to my progress in coming back to the old Sharon.  I have been in Rehab for just under a month and I can now stand up by myself and walk with the aid of a breakfast tray table.  I have just started using a quad cane.  My speech is pretty good, and with some fine tuning, I should be back to normal within six weeks.  My eyesight and hearing are coming along as well.  I ask for your continued prayers and support during this next phase of my therapy.

Love to you all,

Sharon

3/20/08

Greetings,

To all my friends and supporters who have been with me through this difficult time.  I am DEEPLY GRATEFUL for your support and prayers.  I am now home as of March 5th and with the help of my wonderful husband and several friends I am making the adjustment to some what of a normal life.

As far as therapy is concerned I am working every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy.  The big goal now is to regain full use of my right arm and leg.  I can stand quite well with minimal assistance and I have taken my first few steps.  My arm is another situation since my shoulder is slightly dislocated, but with God's help and your continued prayers I know I will prevail.

The therapist at both the hospital and Rehabilitation Center have been simply marvelous.  I am confident that I will achieve all my goals with their help and expertise.

Till the next update.

Love Sharon

ADVENTURES OF SUPER DIVA

Faster than a speeding Belk’s sale shopper, more powerful than the average New Yorker, able to leap out of tall hospital beds In a single bound (well almost)

Look in that hospital room, it’s a Yankee, it’s a Virgo, no its SUPERDIVA

When we last left our SUPERDIVA, she was disguised as Sharon Warner, a mild mannered (not really) headhunter for TRC Professional Services, she was struggling to get out of her bed. Well she did it with a lot of help from a couple of two dedicated PT technicians, Katie and Jennifer. Every day she is becoming better coordinated and more able to deal with her deficits.

SD (short for SUPERDIVA) also took a big step forward; she took a step forward (actually 8 steps). She had to hang on to a “high walker” for dear life, but she did it. Considering that less than a month ago, she came pretty close to cashing in her chips and going to the great casino in the sky, I am very, very happy about her progress.

Other good news, Lilly and Leo are co operating much more, she can move her wrist and her fingers are regaining their mobility. Leo can carry some of SD’s weight. They have taken out her IV line and hopefully will be taking out her feeding tube within a week. She still loves chocolate and her appetite while not great is improving also. She doesn’t care much for hospital food.

She is making great strides with her speech abilities, working closely with her vocal coach, Kristy.  She is also practicing her scales.  Not quite like the old days, but beautiful to me anyway.

Keep in mind that regardless of  the progress she has made, she has a long, long way to go. She needs your continued encouragement and prayers to make it back from the most terrible incident of her life. All in all, given the great progress that she has already made, we are very hopeful that almost all of what Sharon was will return to her. Please do not call Sharon on the phone; her hearing is still not good enough to understand most phone conversations. But she is still eager to receive visitors after 4 PM.

With all the time pressures on me and now that Sharon is out of danger, I will try to update twice a week

Now a word from our sponsor:

SHARON GOOD NEWS GAZETTE

Midweek Edition

When we last left our intrepid Diva, she was trapped inside room 193 wondering what new tortures the PT terrorists were planning for her and dreaming of real All American food that she could taste, chew and swallow ( A rib eye and baked potato would be very nice indeed),

Well, its four days later and Sharon has moved up in the world to room 485 in the rehab section. The physical therapists (who actually are wonderfully nice people) are putting her through tortures like “finding and reaching for plastic cups and then stacking them”, “getting in and out of bed” and the most dreaded one of all ,“trying to stand on her own two feet without help”

The steak and potatoes are still in the future, but she’s doing a great job on scrambled eggs, cream of wheat, pureed chicken and peach cobbler. Nothing wrong with this girl’s appetite. There is nothing wrong either with her personality and intellect; it’s as if it’s Sharon temporarily trapped inside a damaged body and speaking like a slightly inebriated young man.

The three biggest challenges she has right now is to get her eyes working again properly ( she is still slightly cross eyed with double vision), getting her right hand to function (its still pretty useless) and regain normal hearing in her left ear ( working but not very well).

Sharon thrives on the positive energy that her friends bring to her when visiting, so she has asked me to tell you all that she would be glad to see you during normal visiting hours between 4 and 7:30PM.You can also call her at 770-535-3553, room 485, Keep in mind that she will be out of the room in PT most of the day before 4PM. Please keep your visits and calls short.

Sharon and I want to wish you all a special St Valentine’s Day. When, in that quiet and private moment today when you tell your sweetie that you love him or her, take an extra moment to explain exactly why you love them and just how important their love and emotional support is for your happiness and  peace of mind.

Most of all, always remember that the next time you tell them that you love them, it may be the last time you’ll be able to it.

Sunday the 10th

I just left Sharon a few minutes ago and want to let you know that she is full of life, humor and determination to get back to normal. She has decided to name her right hand “Lilly” and her right leg “Leo” and she is talking to them as if they were stubborn children. She is coaxing and cajoling them to get going and start working. And they are responding by moving a little more every day; I’m sure that it is hard and slow work but Sharon’s doing it.

A physical therapy nurse will visit Sharon later today to evaluate her condition. She will determine when Sharon will be able to start eating soft food and drinking as well as when she can move to the 4th floor to begin PT. I told Sharon to be very nice to her if she wanted to get out of 193 any time soon. She promised she would.

All this is a HUGE step forward from the “Keep Sharon alive by treating the stroke and its side effects” phase to the “Get Sharon back to where she was before this happened” phase. This second phase will be long and hard and I will call upon our friends to help us get through it. (I’m not shy about asking for help for my sweetie!) At least I won’t be going to bed wondering what the next threat to her life might be.

I want to take another moment of your time to talk about Nurse Leah and Terry Link.

There is a small army of doctors, nurses, technicians and other support people at the hospital from 5 Star General Dr. Nabil Muhanna on down  who have used their individual  God given talents and working together, pulled my Sharon back from the edge of death and defeated all the threats that have arisen since. We are grateful to them all and especially to ICU nurse Leah who, according to Sharon, was there early on when things were looking pretty bleak, whispering into Sharon’s good right ear words of encouragement and hope in the middle of the long nights.

We are also deeply grateful to our dear friend Terry  Link who has been there for Sharon and me day after day helping us both in a hundred different ways, no one act all that spectacular but, in total, absolutely wonderful.

I’ll bet that if you spoke with Leah, she’d probably say that she was just “doing her job”. And I know if you were to speak with Terry, she would say that “That’s what friends are for”.

John Kennedy said that “…here on earth God’s work must truly be our own”. Sharon and I see the absolute truth of this in what Leah and Terry and all of you angels have already done for us. We will not forget who our angels are.

SHARON GOOD NEWS GAZETTE
Saturday Edition

SPECIAL NEWS FLASH

9:45 AM. In a special news conference conducted from her hospital bed, Sharon announced that her right arm hurt a lot.. This is great news; until yesterday, Sharon had no feeling in her arm at all. The pain is  another indication of Sharon’s body healing itself. We expect a lot more pain in the days ahead as she works hard to regain what was lost. Speaking of feelings, her somewhat paralyzed right foot is also starting to feel  tingly (the same feeling I still have in my feet as a leftover from my good old chemo days) and is another clear indication of nerve regeneration.

More good news-Sharon is now sipping water and will try to eat some solid food either later today or tomorrow. She has been fed through a needle in her arm or a tube into her stomach since January 22. She is really looking forward to eating. It will make her feel a lot more normal and would be a strong indication that the muscles that control her swallowing are  working together again pretty good.

Sharon received a very large beautiful bouquet of cut flowers from one of the singing groups that she participated in. They fill up the room with beauty and Sharon was thrilled to get them. Please do not send any more flowers; these are more than enough. If you’d like to do something like that that would please her, contribute the flower money to your church choir and send a message to her that you did so.(All of them seem to be chronically short on money for “special” music).

We have rethought the visiting concept and decided to encourage people to visit her without restriction during normal visiting hours. Sharon would be delighted to have many visitors; She gets a lot of positive energy from talking with friends. She tires easily so make sure that you are sensitive to that when measuring the length of your stay.

It appears pretty sure that she will be moved to rehabilitation (4th floor) on Monday; the visiting hours there are from 4PM to 7:30 PM. The rest of the time will be spent doing exercises and working with speech therapists. I told her to slow down her recovery or she wouldn’t get any disability benefits. She stuck her tongue out at me again.

This morning I read all the new messages that she had received; this is one of the high points of her day and is deeply appreciative of all of you who have taken the time out of your busy days to send her an encouraging message.

THE SHARON GOOD NEWS GAZETTE

When this investigative reporter went to Northeast Georgia Medical Center last night about 8 o’clock he found a couple of suspicious looking characters taking Sharon’s bed out of ICU 18 WITH SHARON STILL IN IT! When they proved that they were really nurses and had doctor’s orders to move her out of ICU to room 193, I became less suspicious. I followed them to 193 and sure enough, there was a much nicer room with a view waiting for her. Believe me, she is much happier now and what ever makes her happy pleases me plumb to death. Also I don’t have to walk so far to see her

The doctors reevaluated her need for a trache and decided that her throat and swallowing muscles had strengthened with the passage of time and speech therapy exercises that they didn’t see any current need to do the surgery. We had been very concerned that if she had recovered sufficiently to attempt to sing in her operatic voice that the scar and other effects of the surgery would cause real difficulties. Another true blessing for the Warner family.

Sharon was delighted to receive a special visit from Father Vincent yesterday; he has been the source of a lot of the spiritual strength that you see in us and we love him very much

Her voice sounds like a slightly drunk young man; you can understand most of what she is saying but you have to concentrate. The other thing that you will notice is that her eyes are not well focused or coordinated.

Sharon still tires very easily and needs a lot of rest. She is very eager to receive visitors (she’s bored out of her mind) but we have agreed that visits needs to be limited to about 5 half hour visits a day during a “test” period. Please put on the message portion of this website that you’d like to visit with Sharon and whether morning  afternoon or early evening would be most convenient for you and if you had any date restrictions. We will get back to you ASAP with a time and date. Please DO NOT call her or try to see her uninvited. We appreciate your understanding on this (as well as the outpouring of cards letters and email messages that we have received).

Thank you all

There are all kinds of good news over the last two days to report:

Visiting with Sharon on Wednesday night for the first time:

There was inflection and emotion in her voice and I could understand practically every word she spoke.

When I mentioned that I had voted for Hillary that morning, she asked me if it was Super Tuesday. She easily lost track of the days early on. She also said that she was disappointed that she wasn’t able to vote for Hillary too. She was glad that McCain had done well; she doesn’t have much use for most Republicans but believes that he is the best of the presidential contenders.

When I told her that I was going to stop off at Biba’s on the way home and have a plate of fried calamari, she stuck her tongue out at me. (She hasn’t eaten anything since the incident). When I was very sick from my cancer treatments, Biba’s calamari was one of the few things that I still enjoyed eating.

I always ask her for a smile to cheer her up and to check her facial paralysis; her smile is getting more complete and natural looking. She actually laughed at one of my jokes.

When she starts criticizing me for my choice of clothing color combinations I’ll know she’s well on her way to full recovery.

I’ll have more news on her trache status tomorrow morning; it may not be necessary after all.

2/4/08
When I left Sharon Saturday night, she was beating rhythm with her left hand to the “Toreador Song” from Carmen. I bought her a CD walkman with earphones and it made her very happy. She said that she was bored to tears just lying in bed all day. Hearing that made me very happy because it indicates that she is getting more and more back to normal. She has double vision as a result of the stroke and really can’t really enjoy television. Her speech continues to improve rapidly and I can understand more of what she says without her having to repeat herself

Her right ear, and her left eye and hand seem to be little affected by the stroke. Her strongest problems are the paralysis of her right arm and hand and the partial paralysis of throat and swallowing muscles.

In speaking with the doctors yesterday, they made it clear that the main threat to her life is pneumonia that may occur as a result of mucus and saliva going down her throat and into her lungs. The muscles that protect all of us from that happening are impaired enough in Sharon’s case that this is a real threat. They believe that the best thing is to do a tracheotomy. This will pretty well block the gunk from getting to her lungs and will make it easier for her to breath they did not expect it to be permanent. I’ll bet that we will be the only couple you know with matching trache scars on their throats.

They also said that substantially all healing in the brain is done within 18 months of the date of the injury. The fact that Sharon has made so much progress in the few days since her stroke is a very positive sign for substantial additional recovery of her faculties.

As for me I am fighting a bad head cold right at the moment, but I am enjoying the hustle and bustle of the beginning of the tax season. I have some excellent employees helping me carry the load, both personal and business.

Emotionally I seem to be in a pretty good place. I am convinced that Sharon will come back a long way with a lot of patience and hard work from both of us. Its clear to me that 90% of Sharon is more that 100% of a lot of people. What ever she recovers will be fine with me. My love for her has deepened with the passing of the years and even though I have always been very proud of her beauty it becomes less important to me as time goes on.

I believe that many of the bad things that happen to us in this life are simply the result of biological and physical laws that God created at the beginning of time. God deliberately created diseases and viruses as angels of death so that we live only  a few years and  then make way for others, Similarly if we ignore the laws of physics and deliberately jump off a 50 story building, we are going to die because the laws guarantee that the force that we will hit the ground with will be strong enough to destroy many of the physical systems within our bodies that sustain life. Put another way, some of the bad things that happen to us are our own fault and some are nobody’s fault. I feel that belief in this concept has kept me sane over the last five years.

Still with all the things that have happened to the Warner family over that time I am giving serious thought to changing my name to “Bobby Job”

The priests and all the rest of you have been wonderfully supportive. Already we’ll never be able to give back all that has been given to us. So many more of you have offered help and we will need that help in the future as we make some radical changes in our life together. The most important of all is to sit with Sharon (when she is ready) for an hour or two every so often and fill her with positive energy and encouragement.  In addition I have been making other plans for our future and would like to share them with you over the next few days. Stay tuned

Sharon has had a couple of challenging days.  Please continue to lift up Sharon and Bob in your prayers.

Also, please continue to limit phone calls for now, so they can focus on taking care of Sharon.

Bob reads all the postings from this site and is very appreciative of  your kind words and prayers.

Have a blessed weekend.

More signs of progress!
Sharon is sitting up in a chair for a couple of hours a day now.

The “gunk in her throat” problem seems to be going away.

She has limited feeling in her right hand. She can’t move it yet but still it’s a very big step from my point of view. Sharon is right handed.

She is receiving nourishment through a feeding tube in her tummy; this has got to give her a lot more strength.

She is going to be moved today to an intermediate care room; we request that no one try to visit for awhile; we will let you know when she can accept visitors.

Bob

1/30/08
Sharon has continued to make remarkable progress. She sat up in a chair for the first time for two hours. She is now wanting a brush and cosmetics so you know that she’s getting back to her old self. Her speech is still quite slurred and hard to understand, but it is steadily getting stronger. She is coughing up a lot of gunk which is also very important for her improving health.

Yesterday afternoon, the doctors put a feeding port directly into her stomach; the minor surgery was painful but it should speed her recovery further. Now she can get nutrition without the fear of food getting into her lungs and the annoyance of having a feeding tube up her nose. They will wait about a day to make sure that there are no complications with the port and then transfer her out of ICU. The doctor made it clear to me that she will still be in the hospital for 3 to 4 weeks before she has recovered enough to go home. She has a long way to go even after that.

She is working with speech and physical therapists every day to improve her capabilities and is moving her right leg more.

Thank you for all your help and support

1/29/08
THIS IS BOB AGAIN ON TUESDAY MORNING

SHARON CONTINUES TO SHOW REMARKABLE IMPROVEMENT. HER VOICE IS MUCH STRONGER AND WE CAN MORE EASILY UNDERSTAND HER WORDS, THO IT IS STILL DIFFICULT. IN ANOTHER MAJOR STEP FORWARD SHE IS NOW ABLE TO MOVE HER RIGHT LEG, NOT VERY WELL BUT ITS A HUGE IMPROVEMENT FROM A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO WHEN THE LEG WAS PARALIZED. SHE IS ALREADY WORKING WITH THE REHABILITATION TECHNICIANS TO “EXERCISE” BOTH HER BODY AND VOICE.

SHARON WAS NOT TAKEN OUT OF ICU YESTERDAY;. I WAS TOLD BY THE NURSE THAT THEY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT SHARON BEING ABLE TO “PROTECT HER AIRWAYS”. IT IS STILL VERY DIFFICULT FOR SHARON TO “COUGH UP” THE MUCUS IN HER THROAT AND LUNGS. IN ADDITION THEY DO NOT WANT HER TO BE SWALLOWING FOOD OR WATER; THOSE THROAT MUSCLES ARE STILL VERY WEAK AND THE FOOD MAY GET INTO HER LUNGS. SHE MAY BE GIVEN A FEEDING TUBE IN HER STOMACH UNTIL SHE HAS SUFFICIENTLY RECOVERED.

I WILL SEE  DOCTOR MAHANNA THE NEUROURSURGEON THIS MORNING TO GET AN FURTHER UPDATE.

SHARON IS ALERT AND HER MIND APPEARS TO BE UNDAMAGED. I READ ALL OF YOUR MESSAGES TO HER LAST NIGHT; SHE REMEMBERS QUITE CLEARLY WHO YOU ALL ARE AND WAS OBVIOUSLY TOUCHED BY YOUR KIND MESSAGES. I ENCOURGE YOU TO SEND  PLENTY MORE TO READ TO HER..

1/27/08
THIS IS BOB
ITS SUNDAY NIGHT AND I JUST LEFT SHARON AT THE ICU AT NORTHEAST GENERAL. SHE IS MAKING WONDERFUL PROGRESS AND LOOKS AND ACTS STRONGER EVERY TIME I VISIT HER. FOR ALL THAT SHE’S BEEN THROUGH SHE IS STRONG AND DETERMINED TO OVERCOME THIS.

OBVIOUSLY OUR GREATEST CONCERN IS THE POSSIBILITY OF ANOTHER BRAIN STEM  BLEED  NOW OR IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE DOCTORS HAVE ASSURED ME THAT THAT’S PRETTY UNLIKELY. IN FACT, SHE WILL BE TRANSFERRED OUT OF ICU TO A REGULAR BED ON MONDAY AFTERNOON IF THINGS CONTINUE IMPROVING.

HER  DEFICITS ARE SOUND ECHOING IN HER EARS, DOUBLEVISION, NO USEAGE OF HER RIGHT HAND AND ARM, VERY LIMITED USEAGE OF HER RIIGHT LEG AND FOOT, IMPARED USAGE OF HER LEFT SIDE   AND MAJOR DIFFICULTY SPEAKING. THE’RE NOT YET SURE ABOUT HER ABILITY TO SWALLOW. SHE HAS BEEN FED WITH A TUBE UP HER NOSE SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE INCIDENT.

ON THE OTHER HAND HER ABILITY TO SPEAK HAS IMPROVED DRAMATICALLY JUST OVER THE LAST DAY OR SO, SHE CAN NOW SLIGHTLY MOVE HER RIGHT LEG AND JUST ABOUT ALL OF HER MOVEMENTS ARE STRONGER AND BETTER COORDINATED.

WE WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT IF YOU WOULD REFRAIN FROM TRYING TO VISIT SHARON IN THE HOSPITAL OR CALLING HER. SHE TIRES VERY EASILY AND  FRANKLY I KNOW SHE WOULD NOT LIKE YOU TO SEE HER UNTIL SHE IS LOOKING MORE LIKE HER OLD SELF.

TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE ASKED WHAT THEY CAN DO TO HELP OR WANT TO VISIT HER, I SUGGEST THAT YOU WAIT UNTIL SHARON HAS RETURNED HOME AND WE ARE IN A POSITION TO RECEIVE VISTORS, THEN YOU COULD  STOP BY IN THE EARLY EVENING TO VISIT AND  (IF YOU WOULD CARE TO) BRING A SIMPLE MEAL TO SHARE WITH US. MY GUESS IS THAT IT WILL TAKE SHARON SEVERAL MONTHS TO REHABILITATE FROM HER INJURIES AND SHE WOULD BE VERY HAPPY TO HAVE A LOT OF VISTORS  THEN. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN DOING THIS IN THIS PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE ON THE WEBSITE AND WE WILL BE BACK IN TOUCH AT THE RIGHT TIME.

TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE SENT THEIR BEST WISHES AND OFFERED PRAYERS, WE ARE DEEPY GRATEFUL. IT IS VERY REASSURING TO KNOW IN A TIME OF TROUBLE THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE THERE FOR YOU. WE KNOW FROM MY CANCER DAYS WHAT THE POWER OF PRAYER CAN DO.

I AM DOING WELL AND HAVE GREAT FAITH THAT WITH A LOT OF PATIENCE AND HARD REHAB WORK ALL WILL TURN OUT WELL FOR MY SHARON.

AGAIN THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR KINDNESS AND CONCERN FOR US.

BOB

1/26/08
Wonderful news...Sharon was able to whisper to Bob this morning that she loves him!!!  She is getting much stronger and is able to turn her head slightly both ways.  They will move her out of ICU on Monday.

1/25/08
Sharon is showing remarkable improvement.  The doctors were able to remove the breathing tube this morning (three days early).  Her right side is still paralyzed and she cannot speak yet.  However, she is writing with her left hand.  Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.  Sharon's eyes light up when she hears about everyones concern.

1/24/08
Sharon is still in the ICU.  We are seeing signs of improvement.  Please continue praying for her speedy recovery.
